Mount Makalu

Situated between the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and the Khumbu Region of Nepal, Mount Makalu (8,481 m) is the fifth highest mountain in the world. One of the majestic mountains with its perfect pyramid structure, Mount Makalu is a double peak, its subsidiary peak Makalu II (7,678 m) lies about 3 km north-northwest to the main summit. The subsidiary peak is connected to the main peak by a saddle called Chomo Lonzo (7,804 m).

Mount Makalu is considered one of the most difficult mountains to climb and the mountaineers are exposed to the elements and notorious steep pitches and knife edged ridges.

To join the expedition, you’ll need to have extensive mountaineering experience and be in top physical and mental health and is not to be taken in a jest. It would be preferable if you have prior experience in climbing 8,000 m plus peaks.

Detail Itinerary

Day 1

On the very first day of your trip, you will experience something truly Nepalese; traditional Nepalese dinner. But rest assured our representatives will be there to pick you up at the airport, help you check in to your hotel and then take you out for dinner.

Day 2

You will spend the second day sightseeing around Kathmandu - there’s the monkey temple, the Boudhanath Stupa and some ancient heritages of Nepal to be visited. In the latter half of the afternoon our guides will brief you and help you sort out all the equipment for the trip.

Day 3-4

On this day, we are busy for briefing about expedition, documentation and last minute shopping and preparation for departure to the trekking and climbing route. You will be kept in get set position.

Day 5

Take a morning flight to the Tumlingtar Airport where a 4X4 will be waiting to take you to Chichila.

Day 6

The first trekking day is comparatively easy and the walk between Chichila and Num takes only 4 hours if you are a really good hiker. Since it is your first day trekking, you can walk leisurely and enjoy the scenery around you.

Day 7

The trail first drops steeply to a bridge across the Arun River and then climbs up to the village of Seduwa.

Day 8

A relatively short and easy hike to Tashigaon, the last permanent before the Shipton La.

Day 9

The trail starts climbing as soon as you start walking, passing through a forest before you reach the grazing land of Kauma Kharka, your camp for next day’s expedition across the Shipton La Pass.

Day 10

Cross the Shipton La, a tough pass which offers some spectacular views of Mount Makalu, before descending to Dobato.

Day 11

The trail first descends steeply to the Barun River as you walk beside the river through a gorge to an open valley before reaching your campsite at Yangri Kharka.

Day 12

Follow the river enjoying some superb mountain vistas before you make your way to Lengmale Kharka, another grazing area and your camp for tonight.

Day 13

Not much ascents and descents, the trail climbs only 100 meters as you walk through a beautiful alpine setting to Sherson.

Day 14

An entire day in Sherson. Enjoy the mountain vistas around

Day 15

Hike to Makalu Base Camp to begin your preparation for the expedition.

Day 16-46

During this period you’ll stay for a few weeks in the Base Camp where your guides will help you prepare for the climb. You’ll be taught how to use your equipment and get familiar with technical climbing techniques. By Day 46 you’ll have made it to the summit and returned to Base Camp.

Day 47

Descend along a trail parallel to the Barun River to Yangri Kharka.

Day 48

Descend further before climbing a steep set of stone stairs to Dobato.

Day 49

Recross the Shipton La as the trail drops down further to Kauma Kharka.

Day 50

Retrace your steps back to Tashigaon and further down to Sedua.

Day 51

Hike down to the humid low hills of the Arun river Valley to Num.

Day 52

The last hiking day is quite pleasant because the trail between Chichila and Tumlingtar is mostly ‘Nepali’ flat and the scenery is very beautiful. A 4X4 will be waiting for you in Chichila to take you back to Tumlingtar.

Day 53

Catch an early morning flight to Kathmandu and spend the rest of the day strolling around the eateries and souvenir shops of Thamel.

Day 54-55

An entire day in Kathmandu for yourself. Eat as much as you want, go shopping or do nothing at all! If you’re not trek weary, we’ll take you to the Last Resort for an adrenaline pumping bungee jumping adventure.

Day 56

Again our representatives will be there to transfer you to the airport and bid you farewell.
